  •  Reactivation of Fecal Coliform
A report entitled “Examination of Reactivation and Regrowth of Fecal Coliforms in Centrifuge Dewatered Anaerobically Digested Sludges” was published in June 2006 by the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF).  The document describes the findings of a study of fecal coliform levels in biosolids from a small sampling of treatment plants, all of which used anaerobic digestion followed with high-solids centrifugation.
  • Prion White Paper:  Can the potential presence of prions in land applied biosolids result in food chain contamination with the subsequent development of animal and human disease?

    Topics Covered:
    • What are Prions and What are the Diseases Attributed to Exposure to Prions?
    • What Are the Sources of Prions That May be Relevant to Wastewater Treatment and Biosolids Production?
    • Have Prions Been Detected in Wastewater or Biosolids?
    • What are the Methods of Prion Destruction?
    • What Current Research and Measures Are Underway to Mitigate/Prevent Prion Entry Into Wastewater Treatment Plants?
    • What Are the Properties, Fate, and Transport of Prions in Wastewater Treatment and in the Land Application of Biosolids?
    • What is the Risk to Human Health From BSE in Wastewater Treatment?
