The Office of Management and Budget is currently reviewing a rule submitted on August 8 by EPA that is intended to clarify that “sufficiently sensitive” test methods are applied when monitoring chemicals in water.  The rule would establish regulations on chemical testing based upon a 2007 guidance document that focused on analytical methods to test for mercury.  The purpose behind the drafting of this rule is to ensure that methods used to test chemicals are performed in a manner that matches the capability of detecting and measuring pollutants with the sensitivity required for respective water quality criteria or pollutant limits.  EPA expects the final rule to be released this fall.
