President Obama announced on January 29 that the federal government will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 28 percent by 2020. A White House statement said the move would save $8 billion to $11 billion in energy costs, noting that the federal government spent more than $24.5 billion on electricity and fuel in 2008. The announcement came a day after the United States formally notified the United Nations it is abiding by last month's international political climate agreement in Copenhagen, including a pledge to cut U.S. economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020.
