Nebraska Water Environment Association (NWEA) – Collection System Committee
The 53rd Annual Great Plains Waste Management Conference was held on Wednesday, April 1 and Thursday, April 2 in LaVista, Nebraska. The Nebraska Water Environment Association (NWEA) partnered with the Nebraska Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) for this annual event. Conducting a regional conference during a downturn in the economy required additional planning and effort to find quality presenters in order to draw attendees from Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Kansas. The Epic Flood of 2008 in Cedar Rapids was presented by Steve Hirshner from the City of Cedar Rapids. His presentation and video captivated the lunch attendees and provided valuable lessons learned for restoring water and wastewater facilities following a major disaster. The additional planning and excellent luncheon speaker paid dividends as conference attendance increased from 238 last year to 260 this year.
