Total Suspended Solids (TSS) testing is required for both
National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit compliance and
for many different wastewater treatment process control tests. Many wastewater
operators perform this test either through in-house laboratories or in the
field for process control. Further, the test is now being used for stormwater
monitoring as well. However, the procedure is often performed incorrectly with
steps omitted and a lack of quality control / quality assurance resulting in
poor quality data. Many small wastewater plants are still using the
centrifuge spin analysis method, which is inaccurate at best. However,
instrumentation exists, both hand-held and in-basin probes for TSS
measurements, and is being utilized by large and small wastewater plants
This webcast will discuss the importance of TSS testing,
instrumentation, and technique and application of data. During the webcast,
speakers will provide a comprehensive review of the broad range of analysis
methods (gravimetric, centrifuge spin, and meters), along with the advantages
and disadvantages of each method. Process control decisions are only as good as
the data they are based upon.
