Water Environment Research Article Makes Strong Case for Feedback Aeration Control of Activated Sludge Process Leading to Significant Energy Savings, Other Benefits

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The open access article for this month’s issue of Water Environment Research (WER)—the popular journal published by the Water Environment Federation (WEF)—examines ammonia-based aeration control of the activated sludge process, including the potential for significant aeration energy savings performance improvements for nitrogen and biological phosphorus removal plants. 

According to WER Editor-in-Chief Tim Ellis, the authors list several advantages to this process including reduced energy costs, potential improvements in enhanced biological phosphorus removal, and lower carbon requirements for dentrification. A case study at the Nansemond WRRF in Hampton Roads Sanitation District was used to bolster these conclusions.
