Solicitation for Services – Executive Director

The AZ Water Association, a 501(c)(3)nonprofit educational organization comprised of over 2,100 professional's dedicated to Arizona's Water, and which also serves as the Arizona Section of the American Water Works Association and the Arizona Water Environment Association, is seeking an Independent Contractor - Executive Director.   The Executive Director will act as the leading spokesperson representing AZ Water in its mission to advocate for Arizona’s water through bold leadership, connecting professionals, providing education, and inspiring environmental stewardship.

AZ Water aims to be the recognized voice and the “go-to” organization sought out by policy makers and the public in addressing water matters.  The Executive Director will support the execution of the Association’s Strategic and Business plans to accomplish this goal. 

The essential functions of the position include,

  • Drive the planning process to identify, create, and champion a long-term and sustaining funding model for the Association and the Executive Director Position.
  • Work with the Association Manager and Board of Directors to identify and diversify revenue generating activities to support existing and future program operations.
  • Interface with the Association Manager to collaborate on Association activities.
  • Champion a long-term sustainable funding model for contracted positions.  
  • Actively engage and energize members, committees, and board members to advance the organization’s missions.
  • Develop relationships by in-person meetings with municipal and private utility leadership to promote the value of engagement and participation in the AZ Water Association. 
  • Develop, grow, and maintain strong working relationships with affiliated associations (AWWA, WEF, WateReuse, and others).
  • Contribute to the success of the annual conference and Tri-State Seminar.
  • Retain and grow the Association’s membership and subscriber bases and sponsors.
  • Prepare a plan and schedule of activities to accomplish the Executive Director scope of services.
  • Participate in the Association’s Board meetings, Executive Committee meetings, Board Retreat, Committee Chair Summit, Annual Conference, and other leadership meetings as requested by the board.
  • Make contributions to and shape the content of messaging in the Association publication, website, and social media sites.
  • Support the membership committee with implementation of membership recruitment programs as needed.
  • Develop and recommend public relations and other communication programs, specifically:
  • Establish a direct communication program with the media that will provide continued and improved understanding of water issues.
  • Write or supervise the writing of original copy for news releases.
  • Maintain contact with the media.
  • Supervise the editing, writing and publication of marketing material for both internal and external publications.
  • Be familiar with legislative impacts to the Association in accordance with policy and approved budget:
  • Monitor legislation, programs, proposal, and regulations of state or local government to determine their impact on our members.
  • Prepare and recommend public position statements and action of issues affecting our members.
  • Develop and maintain liaison with the Governor’s office, the state legislature, city and county government and any government agencies that affect water. 

Qualifications 

Those interested should have a minimum of 10 years of experience in leading and managing people, public relations, and fundraising. 

Specific qualifications include: 

  • Arizona resident or willingness to relocate to Arizona if selected.
  • Ability to perform as an Independent Contractor, with a Business Insurance Policy and ability to substantiate status. 
  • Recognized relationship network builder who recruits and influences others in support of the Association’s Strategic Plan and Business Plan. 
  • Dynamic advocate of the importance of safe, reliable water throughout Arizona, with strong communication and interpersonal skills proven through recognized leadership in his/her chosen field of practice.  Knowledge of the water/wastewater industry, ideally gained through working directly with or supporting the industry for numerous years. 
  • Ability to work with people from all facets of the water industry. 
  • Experience as a persuasive and passionate spokesperson with strong pubic speaking skills. 
  • Ability to formulate and implement strategic goals and plans with the ability to translate strategy into executable objectives. 
  • Technical competence about water issues, both in Arizona and nationally. 
  • Experience growing revenues and fundraising for mission–related goals.
  • Ability to lead, coach, and grow a primarily volunteer organization. 
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to frame issues in clear and easy to understand ways. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Sound business and financial acumen. 
  • Knowledge of non-profit association business practices helpful.

The Independent Contractor – Executive Director is a part time position, and hours will vary depending on Association need and negotiated responsibilities.
