Here in Alexandria, VA, just outside of the nation’s capital, you can see tourists everywhere. And the same thing is happening in popular destination spots around the country, where travelers are converging to explore or relax, and from our perspective, hopefully taking care to travel lean and green. Whether it’s pleasure or business, here are a few tips to change up your travel to an experience that truly helps the environment.
Choosing your destination and activities:
Before you go:
Reset thermostat or turn off AC/heat as appropriate given pets and plants.
Set your water heater on lowest or ‘Vacation’ setting.
Unplug appliances, which affect watt usage even when off.
Turn off water at outside connection to prevent flooding in your absence.
Try to choose a non-stop flight; the worst emissions from airplanes occur during take off and landing.
Only take as much as you need to reduce the weight of your luggage.
While you are there:
Take walking tours in safe areas.
Use public transportation when possible.
Favor accommodations and transportation companies that demonstrate sustainable practices and energy management.
Participate in hotel programs to reduce linen change.
Dispose of waste properly, recycle as much as possible.
And lastly, consider bringing your own eating utensils and coffee cup. You never know when they might come in handy and it will cut down on waste.
Meanwhile, thanks in advance for anything you can do to help protect our beautiful planet.
