Thoughts from the New WEF President

Posted October 12, 2010

By Jeanette Brown, 2010-2011 President of WEF

I’m assuming the presidency of WEF at a very pivotal time in history for WEF and for all of us as water professionals. We have to think differently now than we did three years ago before the recession. We need to be even more creative with financial resources that at times are not sufficient, and we are all faced with doing more with less. Government agencies have sustained severe budget cuts, and yet we must operate and maintain our treatment plants, repair and rehabilitate our infrastructure, face workforce issues, deal with increasingly stringent permit requirements and high energy costs, manage stormwater, prepare for climate change, and ensure sustainable practices so as to have the resources needed for future generations.

Coupled with all of those are other challenges. There are STILL billions of people who do not have basic sanitation and clean drinking water, which results in millions of people dying each year from water borne diseases and poor sanitation, including over 1.5 million children. And climate change will affect us all, but think of how it will affect developing countries. Just this past August, Pakistan had the worst flooding ever recorded, and along losing loved ones, many people lost all of their meager possessions and were faced with starvation and waterborne illnesses. As stewards of the environment we must also be humanitarians and do all we can as individuals and organizations to truly protect and enhance the global water environment.

As I look to my year as president, I’ll to continue to position WEF and our members as leaders in solving the water challenges of this century and working to ensure sustainable high quality water for everyone.
