Microconstituents and Industrial Water Quality Conference 2009

Marriott Inner Harbor at Camden Yards
Baltimore, MD

Conference: July 26-29, 2009

The Microconstituents Conference and Industrial Water Quality Conference have been combined again this year to provide the latest information on both vital topics.

Microconstituents is an umbrella term for natural and manmade substances, including elements, inorganic and organic chemicals, that encompasses, but is not limited to pharmaceuticals, personal care products, nanomaterial, and other substances termed emerging contaminants, trace organics, endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), and various other descriptors.  Microconstituents including trace amounts of pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and endocrine-disrupting compounds, have been found in waterways, causing concern which has been recently highlighted in media. The long-term effects of these microconstituents in the environment are generally not known. The state of knowledge regarding microconstituents, including current research findings and their implications will be presented and discussed.

Industries are challenged to provide for environmentally sustainable wastewater treatment, reduce the cost of compliance, and provide or recover value for their businesses.  This conference will examine some novel ways industries answer the more challenging issues and address difficult-to-treat constituents.

The objective of this conference
is to continue to provide an ongoing global forum for presentation and discussion of a broad range of environmental water, wastewater, and waste issues affecting the industrial and municipal sectors:  Describe and discuss the latest research, current best practices, and ways to communicate with the public and other constituencies about industrial water issues and microconstituents.

The conference structure will include a workshop and technical sessions related to the following topics:

  • Occurrence in treated wastewater and the environment
  • Latest research
  • Analytical tools to measure microconstituents
  • Treatment technologies
  • Fate & transport
  • Effects of microconstituents in the environment
  • Source control

Industrial Water Quality and Wastewater Treatment

  • Membrane technology for increased conventional wastes and microconstituent removal
  • Energy conservation in wastewater treatment
  • Water conservation and reuse
  • Sustainable process system design
