Conference Announcement

In May 2006, the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation joined the US Environmental Protection Agency and four other water associations to promote effective utility management in the water and wastewater sector. Water and wastewater utilities across North America face common challenges, such as rising costs and workforce complexities, which they need to focus on to deliver quality products and services and sustain community support. Within this context, the collaborating organizations developed a set of Ten Attributes and Five Keys to Management Success that became the Effective Utility Management (EUM) standard.

Ten Attributes of Effective Utility Management

  • Customer Satisfaction
  • Infrastructure Stability
  • Operational Optimization
  • Financial Viability
  • Product Quality
  • Employee and Leadership Development
  • Operational Resiliency
  • Community Sustainability
  • Water Resource Adequacy
  • Stakeholder Understanding and Support

 Five Keys to Management Success

  • Leadership
  • Strategic Business Planning
  • Organizational Approaches
  • Measurement
  • Continual Improvement Management Framework

Nearly five years later, EUM is the standard for guiding utilities to higher levels of success. Increasingly, the principles of EUM are regarded as the measuring stick for managers of utilities of any size.  The 2011 Utility Management Conference™ is organized around the Ten Attributes and Five Keys to Management Success.
