Projects

The City of Louisville, Ky., has ordered one bar screen and one shaftless spiral conveyor/compactor for installation at the Buechel Basin Wastewater System.

The bar screen will have 13-mm (0.5-in.) bar spacing and measure 12.5 m long × 2.7 m wide (41 ft long × 9 ft wide); it will be capable of handling 408,000 m3/d (108 mgd).

The equipment, a Mahr bar screen and a Transpactor™ conveyor/compactor are manufactured by Headworks Inc. (Houston).

Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. (Toronto), the largest independent oil and gas exploration and production company in Colombia, awarded a $100 million contract to Nirosoft Industries Ltd., a subsidiary of RWL Water Group (New York). The $100 million contract consists of the design and construction of a “produced water” desalination plant, as well as the operation and maintenance of this plant for 10 years.

The plant will be located at Pacific Rubiales’ oil field in the Meta region of Puerto Gaitan and will produce 500,000 barrels of water per day. Treatment will consist of various pretreatment stages with innovative separation and filtration technologies prior to the high-recovery reverse-osmosis system. The treatment plant will further limit environmental impact by minimizing brine rejection with a final sludge treatment.

The produced water, a byproduct of petroleum extraction, will be treated by the Nirosoft water purification system to meet environmental discharge requirements. The new treatment process will replace the current process, in which produced water is disposed of by deep-well injection, and will provide desalinated water for agricultural use to grow trees, thus alleviating costs and improving sustainability standards.
