Product Focus: Preliminary treatment


Fine screen

The CleanFlo™ Monoscreen® is a self-cleaning fine screen that is being used in various wastewater and process water treatment applications. Utilizing a blade and drive system, the Monoscreen creates a progressive step motion that enables screenings to be evenly distributed while minimizing water level surges. The result is a screenings capture ratio of 82.5%. Pairing with the CleanWash™ SWP/CPS dewatering unit maximizes solids capture rate for almost any headworks operation while minimizing solids for disposal. WesTech (Salt Lake City). 



Open-channel grinder 

The Dimminutor® effectively reduces wastewater solids size in open-channel installations. The unit features a high-capacity, low head-loss design. Solids are captured on a curved screen, where rotary cutters sweep them into adjacent stationary cutters with a continuously rotating high-torque action. As the cutters intermesh at close clearance, they shear, tear, and crush the solids to a size small enough to pass through the fine screen slots. The grinder features individually replaceable hardened stainless cutters, no seals or bearings at the channel bottom, a heavy-duty stainless steel semicircular screen, true submersible explosionproof motor, an S250 automatic reversing controller, and a choice of channel frames for easy installation and maintenance. Units are available in single and duplex versions in ductile-iron or stainless steel construction. Franklin Miller Inc. (Livingston, N.J.). 



The Monster Industrial 7 Shred grinder is designed to be horizontally mounted on a stand with a custom-designed hopper to enable feed of solids from a conveyor, sluice, or manual feed. Produced in three cutting-chambers sizes (762, 1016, and 1270 mm [30, 40, and 50 in.]) with 254-mm-diameter (10-in.-diameter) cutters, the grinder offers a variety of cutter type and thickness options to best suit user needs in processing rocks, wood, plastics, bone, food waste, and textiles. The shredder is equipped with stronger shafts, which enable greater torque and throughput. With a maximum of 74 kW (100 hp), the shredder is designed to stand up to applications requiring product reduction of up to 42 m3/h (1500 ft3/h). JWC Environmental (Costa Mesa, Calif.). 


Valve box 

The “No Vac” valve box sealed system consists of a valve-box stabilizer and a debris trap, which are available together or separately. The system is highly versatile, fitting all round-valve box bells and bases for use with either cast-iron or plastic valve boxes. It prevents the intrusion of dirt, backfill, or sand from below. Design features of the stabilizer are proprietary and benefit utilities by ensuring proper alignment of the valve box and protection of the valve. It ensures that all “down” force is transferred to the backfilled area, rather than to the buried valve or pipe. The debris-trap component eliminates maintenance and service issues caused by debris intrusion through and around the valve-box top over time. The box is designed to fit domestic and imported valve boxes. Bingham & Taylor (Culpeper, Va.). 


Level meter  

The Model 101 P7 water-level meter features a submersible probe and durable polyvinylidene fluoride flat tape. The tape has accurate laser markings every 1/100 ft or each millimeter, certified traceable to national standards. The thick dog-bone design reduces adherence to the sides of well casing. The tape’s increased tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and electrical efficiency make it robust in a wide range of environmental settings. The probe is engineered to enable submersion to 300 m (1000 ft) — ideal for depth to water, as well as total well depth measurements. The sensor at the tip of the probe provides consistent measurements in wells, boreholes, tanks, and even cascading water, with almost zero displacement. The meter is powered by a 9-V battery. Ultraviolet light  

The WEDECO TAK 55 Smart ultraviolet light system is ideal for small to medium-size municipalities. The light system can meet various effluent qualities for such applications as combined sewer overflows, primary or secondary wastewater sources, lagoons or tertiary wastewater reclamation, and reuse. The light system comes fully preconfigured and in multiple open-channel designs. New configurations enable higher flow rates up to 1000 m³/h (or 6.5 mgd maximum) per channel and optional second ultraviolet-bank setup providing nonstop disinfection performance or higher ultraviolet doses. The optional second ultraviolet-bank setup provides duty/duty or duty/standby operation for nonstop disinfection performance. The system’s electrical components are housed in a separate cabinet installed adjacent to the channel for safe and easy access in all weather conditions. Gas infusion  

The Dif-Jet™ gas-infusion device is an alternative to ordinary diffusers, injectors, and sparger designs for wastewater aeration. The infuser does not make bubbles; instead, it infuses oxygen from air or pure oxygen into the water. The patent-pending design prevents problems with fouling, high solids, or dissolved minerals in the water. It is efficient at dissolving such gases as air, oxygen, carbon dioxide, ozone, and nitrogen into water and also enables mixing multiple gases into water. The devices and systems can be incorporated easily into existing treatment systems and are available in p olyvinyl chloride and stainless steel designs. Fortrans Inc. (Wendell, N.C.). 


Microfiber-pile cloth  

The OptiFiber PES-14 ® microfiber-pile cloth filtration media are engineered to remove suspended solids, turbidity, and fine particles up to 50% better than other filters or microscreens.  The media are ideal for fine polishing applications and proven to reduce total phosphorus to 0.1 mg/L or less. The ability to maintain high filtrate quality provides assurance for meeting even the most stringent effluent requirements. The media are designed for use with AquaDisk ® , Aqua MiniDisk ® , AquaDrum ® and AquaDiamond ® filters for retrofits or new plant construction. Aqua-Aerobic Systems (Loves Park, Ill.). 



The TEQUATIC™ PLUS fine-particle filter combines the power of continuously cleaning, cross-flow filtration with centrifugal separation into one device specifically designed to handle a wide range of difficult-to-treat feedwaters more consistently and cost-effectively than traditional technologies. Applications for the filter range from pretreatment for ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis to filtering produced water for oil and gas. The filter can be used as an alternative or a complement to traditional filtration technologies. It is available in various flow rates with filter cutoffs from 10 to 55 µm to meet specific customer needs. Dow Water and Process Solutions (Edina, Minn.). 


Gas generator  

The Dynacalibrator® Model 150 is a constant-temperature system designed to generate precise parts-per-million or parts-per-billion concentrations of chemical compounds in a gas stream, using permeation devices as the trace gas source. The device is used as a reference for the calibration of gas chromatography instruments and in other instruments that measure gas concentrations. The unit is a compact calibrator capable of delivering the precise concentrations required. Other features include a passivated Inertium® coated stainless steel permeation chamber, which houses the permeation device(s); a digital temperature controller; a wide range of temperature settings (5°C above ambient to 110°C); and reduced flow path volume, which enables low-concentration generation of mercury, water, and other difficult-to-work-with materials. Air filters  

The latest generation of DD+, PD+, DDp+, and PDp+ filters has been released. The pressure of the DD+ and PD+ filters for the filtration of oil aerosols has been reduced, compared to the previous generation; at the same time, the oil carryover has been decreased more than 20%. The DDp+ and PDp+ filters for the filtration of solid particles filters have high particle-removal efficiencies of 99.92% (DDp+) and 99.98% (PDp+). The new microglass-fiber filter media and six-layer wrapped construction ensure high-purity filtration and guaranteed performance over the filter lifetime. The perforated stainless steel metal cores were enhanced to ensure mechanical strength and drastically reduce the risk of implosion. Atlas Copco (Wilrijk, Belgium). 


Voltage drive  

The ACS 2000 active front-end medium-voltage drive for general purpose applications is designed with higher power capabilities up to 3000 hp. Developed with the latest drive technologies, the drive is ideal for general purpose applications requiring a medium-voltage installation, such as pumps, fans, blowers, and conveyors. Users in the water and wastewater industries can benefit from the drive’s compact, lightweight design. Other features include multilevel voltage source inverter topology; high-voltage insulated-gate bipolar transistor power; semiconductors; a direct-torque-control motor-control platform; and withdrawable phase modules, which give front access to all components for ease of maintenance. The Super Gel 9 is a urethane modified epoxy gel that can be employed in a variety of applications. The gel is used in aerospace, electronic, optical, electro-optical, and other specialty industries. It has a low Shore A hardness of about 5 to 10, making it easily repairable and ideal for retrieving components with a sharp knife or razor blade. The gel will not shatter during this process. The gel has a 2:1 mix ratio by weight or volume, along with low viscosity and exotherm, enabling it to be cast in larger sections up to 2 to 3 in. thick. The gel bonds well to metals, glass, ceramics, and many rubbers and plastics and has a long working life of 7 to 9 hours, depending on the mass that is mixed. It resists many chemicals, including water, oils, and fuels. Master Bond Inc. (Hackensack, N.J.). 


Fusion machine  

The new McElroy Super 28 fusion machine is designed for fusing various sizes and types of pipe, from 2-in. iron pipe to 8-in. dual in-line packages of polyethylene pipe. The machine features a diesel-powered 28 fusion carriage on a TracStar 412/618 chassis. The new configuration enables contractors to have a diesel-powered fusion machine on job sites where gasoline is unavailable or not allowed. The machine offers ruggedness and reliability and can be ordered as a combination unit that enables fusion of branch saddles with a maximum base diameter of 9.63 in. onto any size pipe main. The CX-3000 measures conductivity, resistivity, or salinity. A simple push-button interface enables user programming onsite for desired monitoring, with a password protection option for added security. The system’s dual output design, with a 4–20-mA output for temperature measurement, eliminates the need for a separate temperature transmitter. Its large backlit LCD screen displays selected parameter and temperature simultaneously. Conductivity is measured over an extended range of zero to 200 mS/cm for extreme applications. The measurement range extends from zero to 20.00 M-Ohm/cm; salinity measurements cover from zero to 70.0 parts per trillion. With a NEMA 4×, IP65 enclosure, the system can be wall-, panel-, or pipe-mounted for easy integration. Sensorex (Garden Grove, Calif.). 

Ball valve  

The Ener•G ® Ball Valve features an NSF/ANSI 61 fusion-bonded epoxy interior and exterior coating and a bidirectional resilient Tri-Loc™ seating system. The Tri-Loc™ seat-retention system provides positive mechanical retention of the valve seat, enabling easy adjustment or replacement of the seat without removing the valve from the line. It is available on both single- and double-seated ball valves for sealing in one or two directions. When fully open, the seat is completely out of the flow stream, which results in a significant savings in pumping costs, compared to other pump control valves. The valve is available in AWWA Classes 150 and 300 lb, in sizes 4 to 48 in., with cylinder, electric motor, or manual actuation for pressure ranges up to 300 lb/in2. Double-wall piping  

Chem Prolok™ offers broad chemical resistance, low installation cost, and safe long-term maintenance-free service. Typical applications include water and wastewater treatment chemical-feed systems, acids, caustics, sodium hypochlorite, mixed chemicals, compressed gases, process piping, and pressure or drainage applications. It is available in pipe and fitting sizes from 1 × 3 in. through 12 × 16 in. and is designed to safely convey liquid chemical applications with a pH range from 1 to 14. The system also is suitable for both aboveground and in-ground applications and can be installed with either low-point or continuous-cable leak-detection systems. Asahi/America Inc. Stop buttons  

The 40-mm emergency Surface Flush Mount E-Stop buttons are designed to easily mount to a wall or other flat surface without disassembling or individual wiring. The buttons are available with a nonilluminated base with four actuator styles: standard, illuminated actuator, lockable actuator, and an illuminated lockable actuator or an illuminated base with a standard or lockable actuator. The buttons also feature Banner’s EZ-LIGHT® logic and are available with two colors (yellow or green and red lighting) or one color (red lighting). Depending on the model, the visible LED illuminated-base changes from yellow to flashing red when actuated, immediately alerting operators to an emergency stop condition. To enhance safety across the factory floor, multiple E-stops can be connected via the CSS Series Hookup cordsets for systemwide control. Banner Engineering (Minneapolis). 


Membrane system  

The AG LF series is designed to purify tough-to-treat wastewater from industrial processes. The system features a low-fouling reverse-osmosis membrane that resists degradation from water containing bacteria, colloids, and other materials that foul and shorten membrane element life. The membranes require fewer cleaning cycles, compared to conventional brackish membranes, in such tough-to-treat applications as steel production, power plants, and plating processes. The new low-fouling membrane increases the time between cleanings up to 50% and features a coating technology that improves cleaning cycles, reduces pressure, and reduces friction on the surface of the membrane, making it resistant to organic fouling. Nitrogen removal  

The DEMON ® treatment system is a sidestream nitrogen removal process for wastewater systems; it is ideal for municipal and industrial clients that have wastewater streams with high ammonia concentrations. The system features ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, which convert half the ammonia to nitrite. A second anaerobic biological process uses anammox bacteria to convert the combination of nitrite and remaining ammonia directly into nitrogen gas. World Water Works Inc. (Oklahoma City). 


Pipe coupling  

Style 171 flexible composite-pipe coupling is designed for use where corrosive conditions exist. It is ideal for reverse-osmosis skids in vertical and horizontal installations. The coupling does not require disassembly prior to installation. It is simply pushed onto the pipe end as a fully assembled unit and tightened using standard hand tools. The coupling can be used to join standard roll or cut-grooved polyvinyl chloride and cut-grooved high-density polyethylene pipe. It also can be used on stainless steel and fiberglass-reinforced plastic. The coupling is available in 1.5- to 4-in. (40- to 100-mm) sizes and can withstand pressures of up to 1034 kPa (150 lb/in.2), depending on pipe material and wall thickness, and is supplied with the new Victaulic Grade “E2” ethylene propylene diene monomer gasket. It can operate in temperatures from 1°C to 54°C (33°F to 130°F). Victaulic (Easton, Pa.). 


Utility networks  

The Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) and AES-256-bit encryption provide a sustainable communication network for water and gas utilities. The IPv6 communications standard ensures interoperability of all applications that communicate via the Sensus FlexNet system and helps safeguard the need for network overhauls. The AES-256-bit encryption will help water utilities as they roll out applications beyond those that capture data on water consumption by securing management and control of meter reprogramming, valves, and other distribution assets. Hard hat  

V-Gard ® GRN hard hats, identified by their raised “V-shaped” crown, protect workers from falling objects and other cranial hazards. The hats are the first industrial safety product produced from nearly 100% renewable resources. They are similar to conventional hats; however, they are made of high-density polyethylene. Unlike traditional hard hats, this model is manufactured entirely from sugar-cane ethanol. MSA (Pittsburgh). 


Metering pump  

The enhanced version of ProSeries-M™ M-2 Peristaltic Metering Pump is designed for use in small to midsize municipal water and wastewater treatment systems. The pump includes many features and options seen in previous models, which are primarily designed for large municipalities. It can be used with many aggressive chemicals, as well as chemicals that can vapor-lock a pump, such as sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide. The pump operates at feed rates from 0.03 to 57 L/h (0.007 to 15 gal/h), pressures to 806 bar (125 lb/in.2), and a 200:1 turndown ratio. Inputs include dual 4–20 mA for primary speed and secondary trim control, pulse inputs, and remote start/stop. Outputs include a scalable 4–20-mA, 6-amp relay. Additional communications include optional Industrial Ethernet, Profibus, ProfiNet, Modbus, and Modbus TCP. The firmware is field-upgradable. Blue–White Industries (Huntington Beach, Calif.). 


Dissolved-oxygen analyzer  

The Triton DO80 Sensor delivers accurate dissolved-oxygen measurement for many municipal and industrial water treatment applications. It features an ultralong-life membrane cap that does not require annual replacement. The breakthrough FQ sensing element eliminates the need for frequent calibration or membrane replacement. Via digital communications, the sensor interfaces with the T80 transmitter or C-22 controller. The sensor features a maximum error of less than 2%, repeatability of ±0.5%, and resolution of 0.01 ppm or 0.01% saturation. It operates over a wide range with three different outputs, from zero to 20 mg/L (zero to 20 ppm), zero to 200% saturation, or zero to 400 hPa (zero to 6 lb/in.2). The sensor is designed to withstand ambient temperatures from –20°C to 60°C (0°F to 140°F) and measures temperature from –5°C to 50°C (20° F to 120°F). Software package  

The new drivers in Malvern Link II provide a single interface for the Mastersizer 2000, Mastersizer 3000, and the Zetasizer Nano systems, enabling secure and efficient connection with all types of automated control systems, including distributed control systems, SCADA systems, and programmable logic controllers. Through this single interface, users can establish automated monitoring and rapidly implement efficient closed-loop control with minimal expert engineering input. Hand-held cases  

The 1553T range of T cases is designed for use with various hand-held instrumentation, data capture, and controller applications. Available in 6.50 × 3.15 × 1.10 in. (165 × 80 × 28 mm) and 8.27 × 3.94 × 1.26 in. (210 × 100 × 32 mm), the enclosures feature recessed areas for keypads and displays, and are available without a battery compartment. Versions without a battery box have two removable end panels; the battery versions have a single panel at the top of the unit. The battery box in the larger unit accepts 4 × AA or 2 × 9V cuboid batteries, 2 × AA or 1 × 9V in the smaller; connectors for both types are supplied. The removable plastic end panels are machined to provide cutouts to suit LEDs, connectors, and switches, as required. Hammond Manufacturing (Avon, Mass.). 



The InPro 5000i is the latest in the Intelligent Sensor Management family of sensors and transmitters. It is a fully sterilizable and autoclavable in-line carbon dioxide sensor. It provides a barrier against volatile organic acids to ensure errorless measurement. Its diagnostic tools constantly monitor the sensor’s “health” to determine if the sensor can be safely used for the next fermentation run. Electronic documentation capabilities provide full traceability of calibration and maintenance for regulatory compliance. In addition, the signal between sensor and transmitter is digital and is unaffected by cable length, electrical interference, or moisture in the environment. The combination of design and technology makes the sensor ideally suited for continuous, real-time dissolved-carbon-dioxide measurement in biofermentation. Mettler–Toledo International Inc. The series BAT Blind Analog Transmitter is a nonindicating, 4- to 20-mA transmitter designed for use with series EFS2, IEFS, PDWS, TBS, and FLMG. It is easy to set up and can be either wall- or meter-mounted. It takes a pulse frequency output from the compatible flowmeters and converts it into a continuous 4- to 20-mA analog output signal. The frequency for the flowmeter output signal can be adjusted using four rotary switches on the back of the transmitter, and a microcontroller automatically scales all other values accordingly. This unit features high environmental protection with semiflexible-urethane potted electrical components. Applications include data logging, telemetry, and programmable controllers. Remote monitoring unit  

The Messenger™ GMU8120 remote monitoring unit checks equipment operations in hard-to-reach and environmentally challenging locations, and reports data and emergency conditions via cell, text, e-mail, or computer. Configurable with 0- to 5-V, 4- to 20-mA, or dry-contact sensors that detect temperature, pressure, voltage, vibration, and other parameters, the unit creates a database of vital conditions that can be integrated into predictive maintenance programs. Using the remote-control capabilities, users can start, stop, or reset equipment, reducing the need to dispatch a technician. The unit also can totalize flow through a pipe, track run-time hours of a pump, check environmental conditions, regulate temperatures, and remotely reboot a computer or programmable logic controllers. Wireless field detector  

The OLCT 80 wireless field detector and transmitter are designed to monitor oxygen and combustible, toxic, and refrigerant gases in remote locations. The model reduces installation costs by eliminating cabling and wiring. Up to 49 of the devices, each of which has three built-in relays and a maximum line-of-sight range of 3 km (1.86 mi), can be linked via a secure network. Other features include an infrared remote controller and onboard display for nonintrusive, one-person calibration; flameproof or intrinsic-safety sensors; a design suitable for explosive areas; low power requirements; universally accepted frequency of 2.4 GHz/900 MHz; and flexible input/output options, including analog, Tor, and Modbus RS-485.
