The City of Portsmouth in southeastern New Hampshire upgraded its 11 MGD Peirce Island WWTF with a Veolia nitrification and denitrification BIOSTYR® system to remove BOD and Total Nitrogen. By incorporating the BIOSTYR system, the plant was able to upgrade within its very limited footprint and meet strict EPA mandates for TN discharge into the Piscataqua River, while maintaining the aesthetics of the economically and environmentally sensitive surroundings. In this presentation, the City of Portsmouth will share their experiences in technology selection (piloting efforts), construction, startup, and current performance of the plant and BIOSTYR system.
