ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The Intelligent Water Systems Challenge is back for a third year to challenge participants to use innovation and data to help solve some of the most difficult issues facing water utilities.

The goal is to demonstrate the value of intelligent water systems to utilities and foster adoption of smart water technologies, as well as give students, professionals, and technology experts the opportunity to showcase their talents and innovation with a focus on leveraging data using the tools to help utilities make better decisions.

The 2020 Intelligent Water Systems Challenge will run from January 15 to October 5, 2020. Scenarios will focus on collection systems, wastewater treatment systems, drinking water treatment systems, source water/watershed, and distribution networks. Teams with innovative solutions will be invited to present their results in person at WEFTEC 2020 in New Orleans for final judging. The winning team will receive a cash award of $10,000.

The Challenge hosted by LIFT, a joint effort by The Water Research Foundation and the Water Environment Federation, is also supported by the American Water Works Association, BlueTech Research, Cleveland Water Alliance, IEEE Smart Cities TAC, Imagine H2O, International Society of Automation, and Smart Water Networks Forum.

“As the sector continues to advance and employ new technologies, we continue to promote intelligent water solutions that provide useful application in real-time,” said WEF President Jackie Jarrell. “We are enthusiastic about the innovations that are fostered through participation in the Intelligent Water Challenge, which are aimed at ushering in future applications and technologies that can benefit the water sector.”
