Here's what Readers have said about Operation of Water Resource Recovery Facilities, MOP 11

From a book review in the September issue of Water Environment & Technology

Also known as Manual of Practice (MOP) 11, Operation of Water Resource Recovery Facilities, has been known as one of the most authentic and authoritative reference books on the operation of municipal water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). This new seventh edition is conveniently presented in one volume.

The manual has 33 chapters, with an elaborate glossary of terms and useful conversion factor tables. Chapter one starts with a brief overview of all the chapters. The next chapters outline the regulatory considerations, management principles, and industrial pretreatment. The basic safety guidance for the operation and maintenance of WRRFs and collection systems covers all kinds of safety, such as chemical and microbiological, confined space, fire, traffic, machine, and laboratory. The chapter on liquid and solids pumping discusses the fundamentals of operation and maintenance (O&M) in considerable detail. Compared to the previous edition, this section in the new edition has gone through useful revision to avoid repetitiveness of general and specific O&M considerations. The book thoroughly discusses activated sludge processes, which are the most widely used treatment. This chapter’s appendix also includes illustrated examples.

The manual covers in equal length and breadth other biological process such as trickling filters, rotating biological contactors, and biological nutrient removal. The sludge handling chapter covers solids management, residuals sampling, thickening, and aerobic and anaerobic digestion.

The last chapter is dedicated to dewatering and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each method for selection and evaluation.

The manual is prepared by a task force consisting of Water Environment Federation (Alexandria, Va.) members. Each chapter is written by a lead author with supporting contributors. The style is clear and easy to follow. This edition has expanded some of the chapters from the sixth edition. Undoubtedly, this book continues to be the industry’s flagship manual on the O&M of municipal WRRFs. It will be an indispensable companion to operators, utility managers, field and process engineers, and designers.
