On August 1, President Trump nominated meteorologist Kevin Droegemeir to be director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).  This position also, traditionally, holds the title of the President’s Science Adviser.  The position has been empty for nearly 560 days.

Droegemeier has been on the Faculty of the University of Oklahoma for 33 years and has been the school’s Vice President for Research since 2009.  He has served in Washington before, as well, as a member of the National Science Board under both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama and also is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

So far, he has received bipartisan support for his “solid conservative crendentials” and his expected energy in “defending the Research & Development budget and climate change research.” (Science Mag, 7/31/2018).

Once confirmed by the Senate, Droegemeir will be able to work to develop strong working relationships with other senior White House staff, including the head of the Office of Management and Budget, which oversees the annual budget request to Congress, and hopefully help shape budget and policy plans.  (Science Mag, 7/31/18)

WEF will follow the confirmation process and keep you informed.
